Borrowing a brick
from the mountain god.

In early 2023, UPPERVOID erected an ice abode on the ice. The Great Wall stretched endlessly, the ice lake was tranquil and azure, and the gorge concealed, providing an excellent natural barrier for our ice abode at the Duobu Campsite in Qinglongxia, isolating it from the hustle and bustle.

A vast expanse of 20,000 square meters of ice lay before us. The prelude to the song of ice and fire was played as a level eight gale swept through, bringing with it downy snowflakes, directly raising the difficulty level of ice camping.

Ice camping is more challenging than camping on land. You can't directly hammer pegs into the ice, and drilling ice anchors securely into the ice is a technical challenge. The stove for making fire can't be placed too close to the ice, as it can easily melt the ice. The height of the chimney installation must be appropriate to ensure that the smoke is discharged smoothly.

The howling wind constantly disturbed the tent, and hands froze in the minus 18°C air, making them less agile. The ice beneath our feet was ready to bring down those who were not careful, with bubbles surging beneath the ice, causing dizziness in the newcomers.

The ice abode sponsored by the mountain god

As usual, we used materials sourced locally and collected natural objects from the surrounding environment as natural decorations inside the tent. UPPERVOID has always believed that "nature is the home of humanity" and hopes to serve as a link for deep connection between humans and nature. For this ice lake camping, we also hope to create a natural ice abode, with minimal decoration, and use natural and recyclable objects to avoid burdening the environment.

We collected branches, stones, and wood pieces from the nearby area, and unexpectedly discovered a temple of the mountain god. With the friendly sponsorship of the mountain god, we built the ice abode.

Instead of the previous display method of hanging on shelves, the clothes were spread out on chairs and piles of wood inside the tent, making the tent feel like a real living space where you could relax and chat around the fire, and casually pick up a piece of clothing to try on.

Outside the tent, the wind and snow were howling, the tent flapped in the wind, and the crackling fire inside the tent, combined with the ice and fire outside the tent, created a different picture.

Diverse ice experiences

The second day after the snow, the sun cast a layer of light on the ice lake, providing an excellent environment for ice activities.

Ice fishing, ice stream hiking, ice frisbee, ice hockey exhibition match, ice diving performance, electric-assisted ice bike riding experience, ice paddleboarding... The diverse activity design allowed everyone to experience a joyful post-Winter Olympics feast.

Although the sun was shining, the temperature was still very low. One could easily slip and fall during ice activities, and intimate contact with the ice surface was inevitable. The -40°C extreme cold and water-repellent functions of the PEACE removable long cotton-padded coat allowed us to enjoy the fun on the ice without any worries.

It turns out that there is a child sleeping in everyone's heart, and it is easier to wake up in nature. Many people used the props on site to find unique ways to play on the ice. The ice lake became a huge natural playground, blooming with everyone's childlike innocence.

Nature's Unexpected Gifts

The cold weather presents a dual test of both the body and one's resolve. Patience wears thin, and tempers can flare easily. Yet, nature always has a way of unexpectedly soothing you.

A long-awaited snowfall, delicate as goose feathers, allowed everyone to overlook the hardships brought by the cold. In the snow, they rediscovered primal joy, with some lying on the ice like children, reveling in the pleasures of nature.

In the challenging outdoor climate, it brought people closer together. For three days, electronic devices were stowed away, and people preferred to gather around a fire, engage in ice activities, and dance to the beat of African drums.

Being in nature heightened the senses, providing more stimulation than usual. The sound of the wind in the mountains, the crystalline formations of ice, the flow of water beneath the ice, and the large fish leisurely gliding beneath the frozen surface—all these natural surprises became ubiquitous.

Another unexpected gain came from the revelation of fire within the tent. At some point, a companion's clothes were inadvertently scorched, and the fact went unnoticed by everyone. This incident allowed VIS, the founder of UPPERVOID, to spot a new demand in outdoor clothing—fire resistance.

Outdoor scenarios inevitably involve making fires for warmth, and such unforeseen accidents are hard to avoid. This hidden need is considered by many to be the greatest gain from this ice lake camping trip. In the future, UPPERVOID will explore new possibilities in outdoor clothing materials based on this demand.

Before leaving, companions returned the borrowed brick to the mountain god, and the collected materials were returned to nature. We received gifts from nature and, ultimately, returned to it in a more meaningful way.
